F Prof. Susanta Lahiri, professor at Homi Bhabha National Institute, Mumbai was awarded Hevesy Medal Award for his contributions to heavy ion induced radioisotope production, tracer packet technique, converter targets, and green chemistry. He is a co-creator of super heavy element 117. Hevesy Medal is an international award named after George de Hevesy, the 1943- Chemistry Nobel Laureate.

F Dr. Pramod Patil and Dr. Ananda Kumar have been awarded Whitley Awards, instituted by Whitley Fund for Nature, United Kingdom. The awards are also called 'Green Oscars'. Dr Ananda Kumar was awarded the prize, for an elephant warning system that has saved human lives and reduced damage to property in the Valparai area. Dr. Pramod Patil has been awarded for his work to protect the great Indian bustard in the Thar Desert 

F Akash is India's first indigenously designed, developed and produced air defence surface-to-air missile system has recently been inducted into the Indian Army. The missile, having a maximum range of 25 kilometers, can neutralise targets at a maximum altitude of 20 kilometers. An Air Force variant of Akash has already been inducted.

F Two Indians, Naik Nand Ram and Raju Joseph are among those who were posthumously chosen for the United Nations Dag Hammarskjold Medal. It is a posthumous award given by the United Nations to military personnel, police, or civilians who lose their lives while serving in a United Nations peace keeping operation.

F The Hungarian writer, Laszlo Krasznahorkai has won the 2015 edition of the biennial award, Man Booker, International Prize. The prize is intended to honour a living author for their body of work, either written in English or available in English translation.

F The American mathematician, John Forbes Nash, Jr, known for the contributions made to game theory, differential geometry, and differential equations, passed away on May 23. He was awarded Nobel Prize in Economics in 1994 for 'the pioneering analysis of equilibrium in the theory of non-cooperative games'. The biography of Nash, A Beautiful Mind was released as a movie in 2001.

F Gunter Grass, German poet, novelist, playwright, sculptor and graphic artist who was awarded the 1999 Nobel Prize in literature, passed away recently. His popular novels are The Tin Drum, Cat and Mouse, Dog Years, Crabwalk and What must be Said.

F The solar powered single-seater aircraft, Solar Impulse-2 is presently on a journey around the earth. The aircraft is made of carbon fiber. It took off from Abu Dhabi on March 9th marking the start of the first attempt to fly around the world without a drop of fuel. The aircraft landed in two Indian cities, Ahmadabad and Varanasi. It is scheduled to return to Abu Dhabi in August.
