News channels go off air after Pemra bans live coverage of Faizabad operation

The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) issued a notification prohibiting live coverage of Faizabad sit-in operation on Saturday, while many private news channels went off air in Islamabad and other parts of the country.

Pemra notification asked the channels to abide by clause 8 (8) of Electronic Media (Programmes and Advertisement) Code of Conduct 2015, show utmost sensitivity and refrain from coverage of the operation.

Private news channels went off air in Islamabad, amid rumours that the authority has imposed a temporary ban on them. People in Karachi and Quetta also reported channels had gone off air in certain areas.

"This channel is suspended on orders of Pemra," message appearing on TV screens in parts of Islamabad in place of news channels read.

Reports claim that the federal government is mulling over temporarily suspending mobile phone signals and social media platforms including Twitter, Facebook and YouTube.
