Crime re-enactment shows banned in Pakistan by PEMRA

The media regulating body has been in the news for two weeks now; ever since it pulled the strings on Udaari for airing scenes that, according to complaints received, propagate immoral behaviour and criminal activity. The makers of the TV serial, which essentially focuses on child sexual abuse, were sent a legal notice that requires them to provide an explanation by May 29.
While there is still a decision pending in Udaari’s case, PEMRA has issued a new set of guidelines whereby all crime re-enactment shows and those involving police raids will be banned from the 1st of Ramazan. The aim is to ensure that local television channels respect the sanctity of Ramazan.
Chairman of PEMRA Absar Alam also added that all content depicting or dramatizing rape, suicide, and violence will be prohibited.

“Airing interviews of abuse victims will be prohibited too. TV channels should respect the holy month of Ramazan,” he stated.
TV serials are also under strict instructions to avoid showing rape, abuse or suicide on screen, at all costs. Channels violating these guidelines will be taken off-air with immediate effect.
Given Udaari’s controversial subject and the fact that in days to come, one expects Imtiaz’ real face to be unveiled, these guidelines from PEMRA can put the serial’s future in jeopardy. But for now, get ready to be flooded with hordes of religious talk shows created in a game show format.
