How to Paint Ugly Vinyl Floors
When one homeowner decided it was time to do something about a seriously ugly laundry room floor in her house, she found the perfect way to make the space ten times better on a budget!
Tasha from Designer Trapped, found the perfect alternative to completely ripping out the floor or laying down new expensive tile. The old ugly brick pattern was vinyl and as Tasha wrote, it was just “Not my cup of tea. But, I did not want to spend much money on the floor.”
Instead, she decided to paint the hideous vinyl a cute, stripped pattern. Even better, the project was completely easy and affordable.
“Instead of going with deep back and stark white, I wanted a softer look, so I used an antique white and charcoal grey,” Tasha wrote.
She began by priming the floor as you would do if you were to paint just about anything else around the home. One coat ended up being enough for Tasha’s space and she applied it with an average paint roller.
She allowed it to dry for the night and went back over the entire floor with an antique white shade she had chosen as the base for the pattern.
After the paint had time to dry, Tasha used painter’s tape to get the straightest lines possible for the striped pattern.
Getting the lines straight may be tricky alone. To combat this, Tasha “used the existing brick pattern to determine the width of my stripes, which eliminated the need to measure first.”
Next, she painted two coats of grey paint within the lines created by the tape.
Once all the paint managed to dry and the tape was peeled up, the room began to transform resulting in a beautiful space.
“I absolutely love, love, love this floor,” Tasha wrote. “It has been painted for about 2 months already and it is holding up perfectly.”
