School in Lucknow barred a Class IX Muslim Girl for wearing Hijab

Private School in Lucknow barred a Class IX girl, named Farheen Fatimafrom attending class, in St Joseph’s Inter College on May 7 because she was wearing a hijab. The 15-year-old girl was asked to go to school library and the same followed on the next day as well since she wore the headscarf again.
The girl informed her parents who then met the principal to resolve the issue. They submitted a written application to the principal stating that their daughter be allowed to attend classes wearing a hijab. Anil Agarwal, who is the managing director of the school, said that the school followed a particular dress code which should not be violated.
He told a leading English daily that if someone wants to wear a religious, they should seek admission in a madrasa or some such school. An inquiry has been ordered regarding the issue after the mother of the girl filed a complaint with the district magistrate. Farheen’s parents have withdrawn her from the school.

“At the time of admission, the parents had not stated that their child would study with a hijab…the student was told that she can come to the school with a hijab but will have to remove it and keep it at an earmarked place and that she cannot wear a hijab inside the classroom,” said Pushplata Agarwal, the founder and manager of the school.
In the meanwhile, other schools have supported the stand of St Joseph’s Inter College and said that religion should not be involved in the matter.
