Deaths

  • The famous American Journalist James Foley was killed by the militants of ISIS.

Politics

  • The Hon'ble Supreme Court of India fined 14 States with 1 Union Territory of Chandigarh with Rs.25,000 each for not responding to the Report of Law Commission. These 14 States are Bihar, Gujarat, Jammu & Kashmir, Karnataka, Punjab, Maharashtra, Uttarakhand, Andhra Pradesh,Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Kerala, Haryana, Sikkim and Union Territory of Chandigarh.
  • The Government of India drafted new guidelines to Forward Markets Commission (FMC) to empower and strengthen the commodity market. Forward Markets Commission (FMC) is a regulatory authority and is a statutory body which setup in the year 1953. Its Headquarter is in Mumbai and the Chairman is Ramesh Abhishek.
  • World’s first Hindu eco-temple namely Shri Swaminarayan Mandir opened in world’s famous city London, United Kingdom.
  • On 20th August 2014, the Hon’ble Home Minister of India Shri Rajnath Singh launched Mainstreaming Civil Defence in Disaster Risk Reduction scheme. The basic aim of this scheme is to strenthen the capacity of all the states towards disasters.
  • The new project approved by the Government of India to ensure that government services are available to citizens electronically. The name of this project is Digital India Project.

Awards

  • 22nd Rajiv Gandhi National Sadbhavana Award was presented to Muzaffar Ali, who is a famous poet and filmmaker. The award is given to those personalities who give his/her contribution in communal harmony and peace.

Appointments

  • Prayuth Chan-Ocha became the Prime Minister of Thailand. Recently, Yinguluck Shinawatra was resigned from the post.

  • The Indian companies Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Sun Pharma Industries, Hindustan Unilever, Larsen & Toubro (L & T), Bajaj Auto listed in the Forbes list among 100 most innovative companies.
