Deaths

  • Chemancherry Narayanan Nair, the famous Malayalam actor died on 25th August 2014. He was awarded with Special Jury Prize by the Government of Kerala. 
  • Richard Attenborough, the famous British filmmaker and Oscar winner, died at the age of 90. He was known for his critically acclaimed movie on Mahatma Gandhi which won 8 oscars in the year 1982. 

Politics

  • India’s first science and technology institute i.e. Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST) established in West Bengal. 
  • Ahmet Davutogul appointed as the Prime Minister of Turkey replaced with Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The capital of Turkey is Ankara. 
  • The Union Government of India launched India’s first ethanol-run bus in the Nagpur City of Maharashtra under the Green Bus Project. The run bus reduce the import of petroleum products like petrol, diesel and gas etc. The country of Sweden has manufactured this bus and this bus using Ethanol instead of fuel. 
  • Border Security Force and Board Guard Bangladesh signed an agreement on vulnerability mapping to implement a coordinated border management plan to curb drug and human trafficking. The chief of BSF is D.K. Pathak and the Director General of BGB is Aziz Ahmed. 
  • The Governor of Maharashtra Shri K. Sankaranarayanan resigned from the office and he appointed the new Governor of Mizoram. Recently, the Governor of Gujarat Shri Om Prakash Kohli has been given to additional charge of Maharashtra. 
  • Approximately, 218 coal block allocations declared illegal by the Supreme Court of India which were allocated by Screening Committee during the period 1993 to 2010. 
  • Out of 18 Assembly constituencies 10 seats won by Congress and its allies and remaining 8 seats won by BJP and its allies. The 18 Assembly constituencies elections held in Bihar, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka. 
  • The President of France Francois Hollande dissolved the government on the issue of country’s stagnant economy. The Prime Minister of France Manuel Valls resigned from the post. 

Sports

  • The American swimmer namely Katie Ledecky created a new world record in Women’s 1500 meter freestyle in swimming by breaking her own record at Pan Pacific Championship. She created a record by swam the distance in 15 minute 28.36 seconds. Till now, she won 5 gold medals. 
  • Daniel Ricciardo from Australia won Belgium F1 Grand Prix which held on 24th August 2014. 

Appointments

  • Keshri Nath Tripathi appointed as the Governor of West Bengal. He became 22nd Governor of West Bengal. He awarded with Vishwa Bharati Samman, Bharat Gaurav and Uttar Pradesh Samman etc. 

Business and Economy

  • ITC Limited listed in India’s most admired companies. Approximate, 45 companies listed in the FORBES list.
