Business and Economy

  • The renowned Private Sector Bank i.e. ICICI Bank launched EMI facility on debit cards with the condition to have FD in tha bank. With this launch, ICICI Bank became the first bank to launch this type of facility. 
  • The Ministry of Finance gave instructions to forensic audit department to conduct an audit regarding the misappropriation of funds committed by Dena Bank and Oriental Bank of Commerce. 
  • International Finance Corporation launched $2.5bn onshore Indian rupee Bond programme to strengthen infrastructure development and capital market. International Finance Corporation is the member of World Bank Group. 

Appointments

  • Massive aid operation for resident of Iraq fleeing violence launched by United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHRC). The scheme will be helpful to displaced Iraqis who are the victims after the violence in Iraq. The basic aim of this scheme is to improve the life of victim people. 
  • World Humanitarian Day observed on 19th August every year. This day is observed to know the humanitarian personnel who have lost their lives. The World Needs More Humanitarian Heroes is the theme for the year 2014. 
  • Max Verstappen will become the youngest F1 (Formula 1) driver. Now, he is just 16 years old. He is from Netherlands. 
  • Partha Mitra awarded Early Concept Grants for Exploratory Research (EAGER) to map the human brain along with Florin Albeanu. He is an neuroscientist in the USA. Brain Research through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies (BRAIN) initiative is an initiative by the government of USA to identify the brain structures. Partha Mitra is the founder of Mouse Brain Architecture Project. 

Politics

  • India signed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Czech Republic on technical cooperation in railway. 
  • Samagra Kutumbh Survey or Intensive Household Survey conducted by Government of newly formed State Telangana. 
  • Irom Sharmila released by Manipur Court who is known as Iron Lady of Manipur for non-violent protest. She protested against the abuses allegedly committed by the security forces of Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA). 

Deaths

  • The famous poet of Iran Simin Behbahani died on 19th August 2014. She had remained the President of Iranian Writers Association. She is known as Lioness of Iran. 
  • Yoga guru Bellur Krishnamachar Sundaraja Iyengar (B.K.S. Iyengar) died on 20th August 2014. He is the founder of Iyengar Yoga. He bagged three civilian awards of India i.e. Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan and recently Padma Vibhushan. His book Light on Yoga known as the Bible of Modern Yoga. 

Sports

  • Ravi Shastri appointed as Team Director of Indian Cricket team for ODI series agaisnt England. He is former Indian Captain of Cricket team. The Coach of Indian Cricket team is Duncan Fletcher.
